I came across a fabulous link the other day from Education Technology and Mobile Learning which is perfect for use with students by either English teachers or any of us working in school libraries.

The Digital Storytelling Wheel for Teachers post looks like one of those posts that will keep any teacher and their students busy for a very long time as they work their way through exploration of a huge range of iPad and Android Apps together with a host of Web tools.

I just love the graphic too!

Since blogging about Zopler a few days, I’ve had a little contact with its creater – Justin.  Thinking that readers here may be interested to learn a little more about this cool collaborative storytelling tool I am, with permission from Justin, publishing an email that he sent me.

I am in Melbourne too.   Zopler was launched in Feb 2012 with little to no fanfare; just a link on a mailing list of new Web 2.0 websites.  That spurned a range of blog posts and the education sector picked it up.  Initially, I did not position Zopler in any particular field other than writing (obviously), so was not sure whether it would appeal to schools, journalists/authors or enterprise.  Right now, Zopler is firmly in the education sector and I’m very pleased with that outcome.

In April, a middle school (12 – 15 years olds) in USA held a trial run with 300 students.  Students were given an assignment to write a story and submit for grading as a group project.  For that week, students started 800 stories totalling 5000 entries. Although only 100 stories were required for grading, we found engagement with Zopler was through the roof.  Some of those students still use Zopler just for fun.

We’re seeing traffic mainly from USA, India, Australia and Europe.  Most users are teachers, students and early tech adopters to try out a new website.

You are able to create stories that are restricted to a specific group.  When starting or editing a story, under ‘who can contribute’ choose group.  You can then select people you follow.

If the amount of time you spend on a new tool is any indication of how good it is, Zopler has come out pretty well in my estimation!

Spying the link just tonight, I admit to having snooped around, looked around and then played around for ….. well ….. if the truth be told, more than an hour or two!

Zopler has all the bells and whistles of what we’ve come to expect of many of the social networking sites to which we join.  There are options to follow and be followed as well as the chance to share on a wide range of other social networking sites.  Zopler is a social network where writers, authors and students can easily collaborate on writing stories together as a group.

Being able to instantly write and share a story or read and contribute to the stories of others is not only fun, but is a fabulous way to get our students writing.  Stories can be set to public or private or, if preferred, the story can be written by just one person, opened to contributions by others or restricted to a specified group.

With additional options of adding a picture, sprucing up the cover page by playing with fonts and colour, as well as casting a vote on the stories of others to give and receive feedback, hours can be whiled away with this tool.  Apart from the annoying ads which pop up – definitely not something conducive to using in an educational setting – the only other negative I seem to have encountered is that it’s not possible to delete a story yourself once it is published.   Perhaps this is something that will be addressed in future releases.

Instructions on how to use the tool however are clear and concise.   A slide show complements a short video which explains what Zopler is all about.

Creating an account and getting started is very easy.  Beware though, if you do decide to trial this in your classroom, just be sure to allow plenty of time!
